Steal Like an Artist: 10 Things Nobody Told You About Being Creative

I want to start this book review with a short explanation why I bought this book. Well actually it was by chance when I was reading some other book revisions. Ok the intention behind this all was to find a book that inspires me, a book that helps me start new projects and overcome phases when I don´t have the success with a project that I expected.

And luckily Steal Like an Artist is exactly one of those books!

“Austin Kleon is positively one of the most interesting people on the Internet… Kleon makes an articulate and compelling case for combinatorial creativity and the role of remix in the idea economy.”

-The Atlantic

Here are the 10 chapters of this book:

Spine of Steal Like an Artist
Spine of Steal Like an Artist

  • Steal like an artist
  • Don’t wait until you know who you are to get started
  • Write the book you want to read
  • Use your hands
  • Side projects and hobbies are important
  • Do good work and share it with people
  • Geography is no longer our master
  • Be nice (the world is a small town)
  • Be boring (it’s the only way to get work done)
  • Creativity is subtraction

The funny thing with this book is that it actually does not really tell you new stuff. This does by far not mean that it´s useless. It´s more like Austin Kleon will reminds you of things that you already know but did not think that you may need this kind of things for being creative. But that´s not all, the ideas of Steal Like an Artist: 10 Things Nobody Told You About Being Creative are not only for artists or people who work in a creative sector, you can use them for every project you work on. Whether it is something private or a project for work.

Well, ok, this might all not be very new to you. These kind of books work more or less all the same. They don´t publish new, crazy ideas that may change the world. But what they do, at least in my case, they help me to think in a creative way about new ideas. And this most often leads into any kind of new project. So basically when you are about to start something new but you are some kind of afraid or even too lazy to start it, this book will definitely help you to begin whatever is in your mind!
