Before I will explain you how to add AdSense to WordPress please take in mind that the officila AdSense WordPress Plugin gets shut down soon!
AdSense WordPress Plugin gets shut down in May 2017
The official AdSense Plugin for WordPress gets shut down in May 2017. Therefore you can no longer use the official AdSense Plugin for WordPress to put AdSense ads into your WordPress Blog!
AdSense itself recommends the following procedure:
- make a backup of your WordPress website
- deactivate the Plugin
- put AdSense code Spinetts manually on your website
On my opinion this is a big loss because the AdSense Plugin made advertising on WordPress websites very easy. With one click you had ads on every post. Now you have to put the Snippets on each post separately. SO basically when it comes to the question “How to add AdSense to WordPress?” the WordPress AdSense Plugin is no option anymore.
How to add AdSense to WordPress
In this Blog post I will explain you how to add AdSense in Wordress. AdSense definitely is the easiest way to start monetizing your website whether you run a blog, niche website, magazine, news website or forum. Google AdSense does not require technical knowledge to setup therefore it is the best option when you have no experience in monetizing your website yet. Furthermore it is the best paying CPC/PPC network due to its high popularity.
In the image above the green part is the AdSense Code. As you can see it is placed after the paragraph that ends with the words for my clients (It is the area marked with blue). As you can see in the image below there is no ad at all. The only thing you can see is a white space. So copying Google AdSense Code into your WordPress post does not work just like that. But no worries, I will show you a way to solve this problem.
Now it is possible to easily copy & paste the AdSense code to the WordPress Text Editor.
There are many ways on how to add AdSense to WordPress. I will explain you in the follwing paragraphs how to add AdSense to WordPress.
First of all let me show you an easy way how to place ads in the sidebar of your WordPress Blog or website.
Hot to add AdSense to WordPress Sidebar
Adding Google AdSense to a widget in the sidebar of your WordPress Blog or website actually is the easiest way to insert ads to your website. To do this you can simply add the AdSense code to a text widget and place it in your sidebar. Therefore go to your WordPress Admin Panel and click on Appearance > Widgets. Pick a simple Text Widget and place it in the sidebar. Then give the Widget a name a copy paste your Google AdSense code into the text field. Now click the Save button and that’ it
As you can see this works perfectly well and it is super easy! The next thing I want to show you is how you can place a Google AdSense ad in the header or the footer of your WordPress Blog or website.
How to add AdSense to WordPress Header or Footer
Adding a Google AdSense banner to the header or footer of your WordPress Blog is a little bit more complicated than adding one to a widget in the sidebar. The thing is that you cannot manage this with a text widget. You have to place the AdSense Code directly into the PHP code. You can do this via several ways. Either you have access to the source code of your theme with a FTP-client or you directly edit the theme in the WordPress Dashboard. Keep in mind that you should not edit WordPress themes directly in their source code! It is better to create a child theme first and edit the code inside there. In a former article I already explained how to create a Child Theme in WordPress. You can get a short summary here:
Create a Child Theme in WordPress
- Create a new folder in the themes directory and call it something like your-theme-child
- Create a new file called style.css
- Paste the following code inside the style.css
- Create a new file called functions.php
- Paste the following code inside the functions.php
- Go to your WordPress Admin Panel and activate the new child theme
Visit my former article to get more details on how to create a Child Theme in WordPress.
How to add Google AdSense to WordPress Header or Footer
Now let’s back to the AdSense Code. To make it simpler I assume you edit the source code of your theme in the WordPress Dashboard. Therefore go the Appearance > Editor and choose the Theme Header file (header.php).
Now paste the AdSense Code Snippet below the wp_head() function. This is all the trick. Now the ad will be displayed in your header like in the image above. The good thing to place ads in the header is that they are always above the fold so the visitor will see the ad in any case. When you want to place ads in the footer of your WordPress Blog you only have to the Theme Footer instead of the Header, it is called footer.php. Inside the Theme Footer you have to do exactly the same as you did in the header, just paste the AdSense Code Snippet inside here and that’s it.
After we learned how to place Google AdSense ads in the sidebar, the header and he footer of your WordPress Blog I will come to the point of adding ads to WordPress posts.

How to add AdSense to WordPress Post
Since to AdSense Plugin for WordPress will no longer be supported, the following steps are not possible anymore! But adding AdSense to a WordPress Post is actually not complicated at all. Copy & Paste the AdSense Code Snippet into the WordPress Text Editor in the place you want the add to appear. That’s it! The bad thing is that you have to do it manually in each post you want the add to appear.
Like I already pointed out before it is not that easy to place ads in WordPress posts. Therefore Google provides you with a Free AdSense WordPress Plugin that is made exactly for this issue. The easiest way to get the plugin is to download it via the WordPress Admin Panel. Go to Plugins > Add new and type in something like AdSense Plugin for WordPress. Once activated you find the settings of the plugin at Settings >AdSense. Actually I really recommend you this AdSense Plugin, it is super easy to understand and works perfectly. On my opinion this is the best AdSense Plugin out there.
Now you will be asked to verify your WordPress website with your Google Account. I suppose you already have a Google Account and also already use Google Search Console. If not you can get more information on how to use Google Search Console for your WordPress Blog here. Once your WordPress Blog is verified you can click the button Manage ads.
Then a preview page of your website opens. At the top of the page you will find buttons where you can choose the type of website:
How to add AdSense to WordPress – Page Types
You can choose between these 5 page types:
- Front Page
- Single Post
- Single Page
To make it a bit clearer what you have to do, take a look at the image above. There you can see the red circles with a white plus inside. When you click on the red circle the Plugin automatically places an ad at this place. So basically this is everything you have to do. Just choose the places where you want to have Google AdSense Ads and the Plugin will do all the rest for you.
So when you want to place AdSense ads into a WordPress Post you have to choose Single Post at the top button. Then an example Post page will open and you can choose the places where to put ads the same way as described before. At the end you have to click the button Save & activate and your ads will be displayed on your WordPress Blog. There is one thing you have to keep in mind, it might take up to 2 hours until you see the first ads on your website. Furthermore each ad requires a request to a Google Server which means that the more ads you place on your website the slower it will get.
