4 WordPress Plugins to make Your Blog faster

Pagespeed is an important ranking factor of Google. Therefore you should try to make your website as fast as possible. This may boost your rankings on SERPs. But there are even more reasons why you should think about making your WordPress website faster. A study of Amazon shows that a faster website boosts the conversion rate.

Amazon found every 100ms of latency cost them 1% in sales.

And that´s not all, Google found out that half a second delay causes 20% drop in traffic.

So I mean it´s pretty obvious that you should work on the speed of your WordPress website. But don´t worry, it´s not as hard as it seems. I will show you some handy plugins that will do all the work for you. The first thing you can do is to check your website with Google´s online tool  .

It will show you the issues you should work on to improve pagespeed.

Compress Images

One thing PageSpeed Insights might tell you is to compress the images on your website. A really good WordPress plugin for this issue is Kraken Image Optimizer.

The Kraken Image Optimizer can optimize and resize images with the file types JPEG, PNG and GIF. The plugin is free but you will need an account at kraken.io (which also is free).

Browser Caching

Browser caching is another method to make your website faster. This means you tell your webserver to cache files for a specific time on the browser´s cache of your visitors. So if a user visits your website for the second time, your website will be loaded much faster. To implement browser caching you need to write the following code in your .htaccess file:

<IfModule mod_expires.c>

ExpiresActive On

ExpiresByType image/jpeg “access plus 1 month”

This says that all JPEG images will be cached for 1 month. You can do it with every file type you want. Of course it only makes sense when you know that the files won´t change in the period. Because if they do, visitors who already have a cached version of it will only see this cached version and not the updated one. To make it all easy for you there is a handy WordPress plugin. It´s called Browser Caching with .htaccess.

The plugin allows you to choose several file types like CSS, JavaScript, HTML, JPEG and PNG that you want to cache. Furthermore you can choose the time period of the caching. In case you already use browser caching but you are not aware of it, Browser Caching for .htaccess scans your .htaccess file for you and lets you know if you already use browser caching.

Reduce JavaScript, HTML and CSS

When you reduce or compress your .html, .js and .css files, your website will be loaded much faster. The easiest way to do this is using the WordPress plugin Autoptimize.

It gives you a lot of options to optimize code. If you are not really aware of optimizing code you should thick the check boxes where it says Optimize HTML/JavaScript/CSS Code. This will be enough to make your website faster. When you know more about this topic you can open Advanced Settings.

Gzip compression

Gzip compression is one of the most powerful tools to speed up your website. In generally faces the problem that e.g. HTML is redundant. Every tag has its closing tag which is almost the same. Words are repeated in the document and HTML is just not lean. The solution is pretty easy, just zip .html files. Zipped files are smaller, which saves a lot of bandwidth and loads your website faster. And this is basically what Gzip compression does. It zips your files so they load faster. A good WordPress plugin which will do this for you is Optimizer for Faster Websites.
